You might just find something worth your while on there. Craving more sports? Check out what made our list of the best sports games of 2021. That's it for our look at Switch Sports multiplayer! You're now ready to dive into some exciting matches with people all across the world. It'll prompt you to dock the console for TV play - something the Nintendo Switch Lite doesn't support.Īs such, not only will you need a pair of Joy-Con controllers to play Switch Sports on your Nintendo Switch Lite, you'll also need to actually go out and buy a regular Nintendo Switch if you ever hope to play with local friends. You can play online, but anything that would require the game to go into split-screen mode won't work. The Nintendo Switch Lite does support Switch Sports, but Switch Sports multiplayer is very restricted. In that mode, each player needs two, so if you don't have four, you'll be unable to play local multiplayer with a friend. All of the modes except one require one Joy-Con each - except football. As such, if you have a Switch Lite console, you won't be able to enjoy Switch Sports without shelling out for the pricey controllers. On top of that, you'll need a set of Joy-Con for the games. The same goes for most multiplayer games on Nintendo's console, aside from the free-to-play ones. ![]() What Do I Need For Switch Sports Multiplayer?Īs you might expect, you'll need an active Nintendo Switch Online subscription to enjoy the online modes in Switch Sports multiplayer. Just follow the steps above to launch into a match with nearby friends. To play with friends in the same room, you don't need to mess around with online lag or have a Nintendo Switch Online subscription at all. Then you can choose to either create a lobby for friends to join, or to enter one yourself.Select Single Player or Two Player, depending if you're also lobbying up with someone locally. This time, select the Play with Friends option. It's a bonkers decision not to lock every sense of progression and customisation to the online mode, and it makes Switch Sports not only a much weaker title, but one I feel compelled to advise people against playing completely. How Do I Play Switch Sports Online With Friends? Even those of us with the online capabilities probably don't feel like grinding out Badminton matches in our living room against online try-hards. There's versus mode, and for people without Nintendo Switch Online, that's it. As fun as it is to swing your arms and have the tennis racquet really move, this is essentially a sports game with no career mode, no story mode, no challenge mode, and no customisation. Switch Sports is a lot of fun with friends or family - my partner, who plays no video games, enjoyed all of them apart from Volleyball - but you'd like there to be a little bit of incentive for players to work on their skills or just relax on their own, and feel like they're getting somewhere. Golf is set to be added at a later date, and as the only sport aside from Bowling where you play against yourself, its loss is sorely felt here. Bowling has a mode with wacky barriers on the lanes too, but other than that the sports are just the sports. Football, at least, comes with a Shoot Out minigame, which despite its name is not about scoring penalties but instead about diverting crosses. Volleyball and Football are more complex, but Football justifies this with rewarding and engaging gameplay, while Volleyball feels like the odd one out. The golf mode features 21 holes pulled from Wii Sports and Wii Sports Resort alongside the online Survival Golf mode that sees several players compete simultaneously. The original three are as solid as ever, while Badminton is easy to pick up and surprisingly different to Tennis in its execution. Switch Sports comes with six sports in total: Tennis, Bowling, and Chambara all return from previous editions (Chambara was called Sword Fighting), while Football, Volleyball, and Badminton join the fray. ![]() It's a very specific breakdown of Switch Sports' biggest flaw, and while I still had a lot of fun with the game, it's worth getting the message out there: if you're not planning to play online, there is very little in Switch Sports for you. You can read my full review here, which goes into detail of the various sports, comparisons to the original Wii Sports, and includes a charming Aaron Ramsay meme which took me a whole four minutes to make. This is not even an M&S review of Switch Sports.
